ko te rangi e teretere ana- from the nothing the begetting

There are many genealogies which show how light and life came from chaos and night.
In Maori the cycle of legents which centre on the separating of Ranginui the Sky Father and Papatuanuku the Earth Mother symbolises the coming of ligth into the world.
We can recognise the same line of thought that animated Maori tohunga (experts in sacred lore) of old in the tales of a civilisation as far removed as that of the ancient GREEKS. Hesiod ´s Theogony, for instance, dealt with the creation, or procreation, of the world and his multitudinous gods.
In Maori´s world there was one supreme God Io .
In adddition to Io , in the Lore of the Whare-wananga there is a curious multiplying of gods and demigods:
Ιο, Io Ora, Io Mate, Te Rea, Te Kore, Te Ikaroa, Ira, Ira Atua, Ira whaki,Te Atarachi, Mataora, Manaia,Kumara,Pelorus,Pania, Aotea, Aotearoa,Bouraea, Koronae,Kitea, Maea, Ureia!
